Vedcom z Washingon Carnegie Institution sa podarilo vyrobiť novú modifikáciu uhlíka - Fullerén.
Fullerény sú molekuly z atómov uhlíka guľovitého tvaru, ktoré pripomínajú futbalovú loptu. Majú súčasne znaky kryštalickej aj amorfnej štruktúry. Sú mimoriadne odolné voči fyzikálnym vplyvom. Fyzikálne vlastnosti fullerénu ho zatiaľ stavajú na prvé miesto v oblasti nanotechnológie.
